March 22 2015 drive day report:
To say things did not go to plan would be an understatement!
We got away on time with around 12 cars.
We decided we would meet up at Launching Place as our first stop. Well the usual happened and we got split up and half the cars went through a too a bit too far. Eventually we got together again only to decide we would stop at Warburton. The only trouble being, that is not on the way to Mt Baw Baw! So we get to Warburton where we then decide to go up the Reefton Spur.
So after a nice drive up there we are stopped at the top by race officials. There is a round of the Australian Tarmac Rally on. So we watch a few of the cars head off and it’s all good (including a member here, see pics).
Half the attendees decide it might be an idea to head home since the original plan is now in tatters.
Next thing we know, an official asks us if we want to drive up to the next spectator point. “Oh...and it’s a closed road”.
So they wave us through and off we go on a nice drive through the forest on a closed road
Up the road, the rally cars are coming down the hill so it is a bit of fun to watch them. All we have to do now is get off the mountain. There is a short break so they wave us off to Marysville... another closed road
A nice lunch stop at Marysville and we took a drive through a couple of Toolangi forest roads. Nice.
There were a couple of moments that concerned me (not Ozrenault people). Coming up to a right hander just before I got there, a car coming the other way was over the middle line. Lucky I was not another 30 meters further along. On another stretch almost the same thing happened and I had to swerve and put 2 wheels off the tarmac. Not happy! A little further there was a motorbike getting loaded onto a truck and an ambulance was spotted driving down the hill. It’s just a reminder that you might be doing the right thing but the people coming the other way might not be!
Overall a very, very good day!
